[
committee meetings] [tour speakers program] [conferences] [new venture] [ACPNS] [biochemistry]The annual meeting of the Chemistry Committee was held May 16, 1996, hosted by St. Francis Xavier University. Eleven member institutions were represented. We continue to meet annually, since 1993, to minimize expenses, but it continues to be very difficult especially for representatives based in Newfoundland to attend meetings on the mainland, and vice-versa. At this meeting, members from MUN, NSAC had sent regrets. Although we are able to maintain good communications by e-mail, the scarcity of travel funds from member institutions to attend annual meetings remains a serious impediment to the full participation of all members in committee activities. The executive this past year included: Scott Daniels (Acadia) Chair; Steve Ayer, Archie McCulloch -alternate (IMB) Vice-Chair; and Truis Smith-Palmer (St.FX) Secretary.

The 22nd annual 1997 Atlantic Student Chemistry Conference will be held at Université de Moncton, May 14-16. The meeting's objectives are to encourage social and educational interactions between students and to promote research in the various fields of chemistry in the region. The theme of this conference will be "Environment: An Everyday Science." The conference will be held in both official languages. Approximately eighty undergraduate and graduate students are expected. This year, biochemistry students will also be invited. The conference will consist of oral presentations and poster sessions that will reflect the students research work such as summer projects, honours theses, and graduate theses. Keynote speakers will discuss various aspects related to the environment. APICS has been asked to contribute $1000 to support this conference.
The 1996 Atlantic Student Chemistry Conference was held at Saint Frances Xavier University, May 15-17. There were 17 oral and 15 poster presentations by undergraduate students. The prizes for these presentations totaled $1000, and $2764 was provided in student travel reimbursements. Keynote speakers included: 1) Dr. Joe MacNeil (University of California at San Diego); 2) Dr. Cameron Black (Merck Frosst); and 3) Dr. Manuel Aquino (St. Francis Xavier). Given that this conference turned a profit of $3845, the APICS Chemistry Committee has reconsidered the conditions of its financial contribution to this conference, especially noting that the Chemical Institute of Canada sponsor (since 1967) contributes only seed money to the conference.
Based on a motion proposed by the chair, and an e-mail vote, the following decision was reached:
APICS will provide their CIC/APICS Atlantic Student Conferences with $1000 in the form of a forgivable loan. In the event of profits derived from organizing the student conference, those profits will be equitably returned to sponsors requesting reimbursement, including APICS. (more details)
The terms and conditions have been completed for a new, $1000 annual award to be made by Sepracor Canada to the top oral presentation at the Annual Atlantic Student Chemistry Conference. Both APICS the Atlantic Section Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) will administrate this award.
The education committee and the organizers of the 22nd Annual CIC/APICS Student Chemistry Conference have been working hard to provide new awards at the May 14-16, 1997 meeting.
Students choosing to compete for this award ($100) are to provide a 1-2 page written press release, an audio or video tape (max. 2 minutes), or a WWWPage as their submission. They will be attempting to communicate their research to a general audience, i.e. communicating their science to the public.
The APICS Chemistry Committee decided to commit 1/5th of its annual budget ($500) to explore a joint venture with Science East. The APICS contribution has supported the production of an Olfactory Factory exhibit that will circulate between schools and musea willing to pay for transportation costs. After 1-year of travel in New Brunswick, the exhibit will be available to any Atlantic Region school, museum, library or the like providing they are able to cover the costs for relocating the exhibit.
The impending Act revision for the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (APENS) has brought concern from Chemists in Nova Scotia. This Act, now before the provincial legislature, (Bill 20), was scheduled for second reading and debate sometime in the fall of 1996. The bill has been delayed, primarily owing to conflicts with the Architects of Nova Scotia. Concern about how this act may affect the work of Chemists in Nova Scotia has resulted in a committee being formed to investigate forming an Association of the Chemical Profession in Nova Scotia. Such an association has already been formed in Ontario, the Association of the Chemical Profession of Ontario, ACPO. This committee has met twice and has solicited input from Atlantic Canada members of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC).
I have been approached by the CIC to represent Nova Scotia at a National workshop on this issue to take place in Toronto on May 30, 1997. I will have more to say about this workshop at our next APICS Council meeting.

The Atlantic CIC membership was asked whether they felt the formation of a professional association of chemists would something they were interested in. It was felt that there was insufficient response for the committee to take further action at the present time.

At the 1996 spring meeting of council, the recommendation was made that the Biology and Chemistry committees of APICS invite their Atlantic colleagues in biochemistry to join their committees. Representatives at DAL, MUN and Mt. A. have been contacted to join the APICS Chemistry Committee. We look forward to meeting these new members at our May 14-16 meeting at the Universite de Moncton.
The APICS Chemistry Committee has been contacted by Sepracor Canada (Windsor) requesting details on membership within APICS. Sepracor has been actively involved in education and research in the Atlantic region through participation in University research and student conferences. This matter awaits response from the APICS Council Executive.
The next meeting of the Chemistry Committee will be held in conjunction with the May 14-16, 1997 Student Conference at Université de Moncton. The following meeting will take place at Memorial University in May of 1998.

The 22nd annual 1997 Atlantic Student Chemistry Conference was held at Université de Moncton, May 14-16. The theme of this conference was "Environment: An Everyday Science." The conference was be held in both official languages. There were about 100 participants including undergraduates, graduates and faculty members. This year, biochemistry students presented. The conference consisted of oral presentations and poster sessions that reflect the student researc: summer projects, honours theses, and graduate theses. Keynote speakers spoke on various aspects related to the environment: Mr. Garth Bangay (Environment Canada -Director General Atlantic Region), Dr. Neigel Bunce (University of Guelph), and Dr. Raymond Cote (Dalhousie University).
APICS travel reimbursements were provided in the amount of $1262.59. A cheque in the amount of $333.33 was returned to APICS and the conference organizers forwarded $1180.77 to the organizers of the 1998 Atlantic Section CIC/APICS conference at Memorial University. A detailed outline of their conference budget can be found at the following url: http://ace.acadiau.ca/science/chem/sdaniels/APICS/Budgets/UdM97F.htm
The first Sepracor Canada Award was given to Diane Burke (MUN). Dianne, an undergraduate student under the research supervision of Dr. Graham Bodwell, used the travel award ($1000) to attend the national Chemical Institute of Canada conference in Windsor, ON, June 1-5.
The education committee and the organizers of the 22nd Annual CIC/APICS Student Chemistry Conference worked hard to provide a new award at the UdM conference. Vickram Bissonauth (UdM) was the recipient.
Students choosing to compete for this award ($100) were to provide a 1-2 page written press release, an audio or video tape (max. 2 minutes), or a WWWPage as their submission. They were attempting to communicate their research to a general audience, i.e. communicating their science to the public. Submission this year were 1-2 page written reports.

S. Daniels was approached by the CIC/CSC to represent Nova Scotia at a National workshop on this issue to take place in Mississauga on May 30, 1997. It was decided that the CSC, at the national level, would seek "right to title" through national trademark legislation. As a long-term goal it was felt that this should encompass a wider category of professional scientists as a long term goal.
The next meeting of the Chemistry Committee will be held in conjunction with the May, 1998 Student Conference at Memorial University, Newfoundland. The following meeting will take place at UPEI in May of 1999.
